To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills how many officials in his Department travelled by first class train in (a) 2009, (b) 2010, (c) 2011 and (d) 2012; and what the cost to the public purse was in each such year.

The number of first class rail journeys taken by BIS staff (including UKTI) and the costs for these journeys are as follows:

Number of journeys Total cost (£)
2009/10 1,970 387,949
2010/11 1,265 171,773
2011/12 568 53,195

For ease, the data has been provided in financial years as this mirrors the recording of all corporate travel and hotel use. Data for prior years is not held centrally within the Department and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
