To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills how many officials in his Department travelled business class by train in (a) 2009, (b) 2010, (c) 2011 and (d) 2012; and what the cost to the public purse was in each such year.

There were no business class rail journeys made by BIS staff (including UKTI) during 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. The rail journeys made during this time were either at first or standard (economy) class.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
