To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs whether an evaluation of the incidence of TB in cattle in the badger cull pilot areas will be conducted during the pilot period.
David Heath
The Minister of State, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
The main purpose of the pilots is not to determine the impact of badger culling on TB incidence in cattle. However, information on cattle TB incidence will continue to be collected from the pilot areas as part of DEFRA's ongoing TB surveillance programme. We are putting in place research that will examine this information as it becomes available, to evaluate the impact of the badger control policy. However, it will be a number of years before culling has an impact on cattle TB incidence.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
