To ask Her Majesty’s Government what advice on genetic modification, and from whom, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (1) sought, and (2) was given, prior to making his statements on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and his speech at Rothamsted Research on 20 June.

The Secretary of State's recent statements and speech were based on a general understanding of a broad and varied range of available evidence on genetically modified (GM) crops, as well as some examples of specific impacts. Ministers receive scientific advice on the safety of proposed GM crops from the independent Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment, and the European Food Safety Authority also provides independent advice on GM products being assessed for possible EU approval.
