To ask the Secretary of State for Defence with reference to the answer to the hon. Member for Lewes of 17 November 2008, Hansard, column 153W, on RAF Welford, whether the security enhancements at RAF Welford have been completed; and whether a complement of Ministry of Defence police remains stationed at the base.

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave on 17 November 2008, Hansard, column 153W, to Norman Baker. Although significant progress has been made, the security enhancements at RAF Welford are not yet complete. The Ministry of Defence police will not be withdrawn from RAF Welford until the necessary security enhancements at the base have been completed.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
