To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what major improvements have been made to the UK's airport infrastructure in the last 12 months.

Photo of Jim Fitzpatrick Jim Fitzpatrick Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport)

The Government support the sustainable development of airport infrastructure needed to serve the interests of air transport users and the wider UK economy. Within this policy framework, airport operators deliver infrastructure improvements. Over the last 12 months, there have been numerous infrastructure improvements at airports across the UK ranging from enhanced surface access links and terminal facilities to runway resurfacing. Details of all of these are generally available on the websites of individual airports.

The Government is in fact encouraging the unsustainable addition of extra runways.

Not only are these not needed at present, because of the economic downturn, they will also become redundant soon after any economic recovery because increased economic activity will lead to increased oil prices.

Instead of encouraging unsustainable airport expansion the Government should be preparing for increased oil prices by developing public transport and local economies that depend less on the transport of goods. Such investment would also help reduce climate change emissions.
