Inheritance Tax — [Sir Robert Syms in the Chair] (17 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman for giving way again; he is being incredibly generous with his time. I am incredibly proud of my party and the track record of what it has delivered for our country over the past few years: the incredible support given throughout covid and to working families up and down the country through the cost of living crisis.

Peter Gibson: Will the hon. Gentleman give way?

Inheritance Tax — [Sir Robert Syms in the Chair] (17 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman for giving way. I particularly wanted to intervene when he was talking about business and agricultural property relief. Does he agree that the survival of many farms and family businesses relies on the fact that they are not taxed at the point of death?

Inheritance Tax — [Sir Robert Syms in the Chair] (17 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman, who I consider a friend, for giving way. I am interested in his points on a proportional property tax. We know from research that northern constituencies like ours would benefit significantly from that. Does Labour propose to include it in its manifesto?

Inheritance Tax — [Sir Robert Syms in the Chair] (17 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Sir Robert, and I congratulate the hon. Member for Hemsworth (Jon Trickett) on securing this important debate. As a practising solicitor—I draw the House’s attention to my entry in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests—it was common for me to provide advice to clients while they were planning for later life. While I was...

Inheritance Tax — [Sir Robert Syms in the Chair] (17 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I completely agree with my right hon. Friend. We know that when we reduce a tax, the effect has the potential to cascade throughout families—and throughout the country, because not all beneficiaries of estates necessarily live in the constituency where the house that is left behind is situated. I will conclude on that point. Will the Minister respond specifically to my point about the...

Peter Gibson: Will the hon. Member give way?

Inheritance Tax — [Sir Robert Syms in the Chair] (17 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman for giving way. I am following his logic about money staying in a constituency where inheritance tax falls, but that presupposes that all beneficiaries of that deceased’s estate live and reside in that constituency, which is not the case. Beneficiaries often live throughout the country.

Illegal Vapes (16 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I am delighted to have led the debate this afternoon and to have heard from the Minister. I was pleased to hear all the contributions from Members across the Chamber, and it is clear that there is cross-party and political-free concern about the issue of our children’s welfare. I am particularly pleased that my hon. Friend the Member for Sleaford and North Hykeham (Dr Johnson) is here,...

Peter Gibson: Will the hon. Lady give way?

Illegal Vapes (16 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I beg to move, That this House has considered the matter of the use and sale of illegal vapes. It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Sir Mark, and I am pleased to have secured this debate, in order to highlight my concerns about the use and sale of illegal vapes. As a country, we should be pleased with the progress that we have made in reducing smoking, with smoking rates falling...

Illegal Vapes (16 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: It would not be a Westminster Hall debate without an intervention from the hon. Gentleman. He anticipates two of the points that I am about to come on to in my speech—first, the popping up of these shops; and secondly, the need for licensing. So, I thank him for his intervention. Legally supplied cigarettes have reached a price that puts them beyond the reach of children’s pocket money....

Illegal Vapes (16 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: I am grateful to my hon. Friend for that intervention; he raises a really important point. It is right that we encourage people to stop smoking and that smokers have an array of products available to help them, but those products must be legal. They must be supplied legally and made available in the right way. Trading standards in Darlington, which is doing a tremendous job led by Shaun...

Written Answers — Department of Health and Social Care: Dementia: Continuing Care (16 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many and what proportion of people diagnosed with dementia in (a) Darlington constituency and (b) the rest of England are in receipt of continuing healthcare as of 8 January 2023.

NHS Dentistry ( 9 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: The hon. Lady is obviously in a different ICB area from mine and I am not privy to the detail in respect of her ICB’s underspend, but it would be wonderful to know whether her ICB does in fact have an underspend.

NHS Dentistry ( 9 Ion 2024)

Peter Gibson: The hon. Lady and I share the same integrated care board. If this is to do with austerity, why has she not engaged with our local ICB to ask it about the underspend and the provision in her constituency?
