Work and Pensions: Social Security Recipients: Employment and Earnings (24 Ebr 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: I thank the Minister for his response. My constituents in Vauxhall have seen food prices go up by nearly 20%, their household bills go through the roof, and their already high rents going up, in some cases by up to 16.5%. That is while real-terms pay has been falling for 18 months. How does the Minister propose to give workers in Vauxhall, and those on benefits, a real pay rise?

Future of Social Housing — [Ian Paisley in the Chair] (19 Ebr 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Mr Paisley. I pay tribute to my hon. Friend the Member for Weaver Vale (Mike Amesbury) for securing this really important debate and for his powerful contribution. He spoke passionately about this issue, which is close to many of our hearts. Debates on social housing are personal to me, as they are to many people in Vauxhall. Like many other...

Religious Minorities in Nigeria — [Caroline Nokes in the Chair] (18 Ebr 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: I thank the Minister for her commitment to pass the comments on to other Ministers. Will she highlight to them the scarcity of cash in Nigeria? The outgoing President recently announced that Nigeria is withdrawing the 1,000, 200 and 500 naira notes in a bid to curb money laundering and fraud, but that has caused real situations and issues and violence on the ground in Nigeria, where a number...

Religious Minorities in Nigeria — [Caroline Nokes in the Chair] (18 Ebr 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: It is possible to meet Christians who would say that they are Muslim as well. The figures are definitely disputed. On celebrating that diversity, and the fact that so many languages are spoken in Nigeria, does the hon. Gentleman agree that more work should be done to highlight the figures, so that we can work with the relevant communities—be they Christian, Muslim or people of no faith?

Religious Minorities in Nigeria — [Caroline Nokes in the Chair] (18 Ebr 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Ms Nokes. I pay tribute to the omnipresent Member for Strangford (Jim Shannon) for securing this important debate, which close to our hearts; we often speak about Nigeria. As many Members know, my family heritage is from Nigeria. This subject is also close to the hearts of my constituents in Vauxhall. The Nigerian diaspora in the UK continues to...

Religious Minorities in Nigeria — [Caroline Nokes in the Chair] (18 Ebr 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: I thank the hon. Member for making that really valid point. One thing that we in the all-party parliamentary group on Nigeria did was to meet the high commissioner, His Excellency the honourable Tunji Isola, last November. At that meeting, we highlighted issues with policing and security, and we spoke about what he was doing as the ambassador to the UK to work with the British Government. I...

Florence Eshalomi: I rise to support the amendments in the name of my hon. Friend the Member for Aberavon (Stephen Kinnock). I am proud to speak on behalf of my Vauxhall constituents, many of whom have contacted me about this important issue. In my constituency—as in many others, to be fair—we celebrate diversity and welcome people from all over the world who are fleeing war and persecution. We stand in...

Illegal Migration Bill: Clause 2 - Duty to make arrangements for removal (28 Maw 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: The hon. Lady is making some powerful points. I declare an interest as a co-chair of the all-party parliamentary group on HIV/AIDS. Along with many other nations, the UK is working to end new HIV transmissions by 2030. The UK is also one of the co-founders of the Global Fund, which aims to ensure commitment and funding. Does she agree that, in denying help to people who are diagnosed with...

Strip Searching of Children (28 Maw 2023)

Florence Eshalomi: I try not to get personal—to keep things professional—but my daughter is eight years old. To think that she could have been strip searched and I, her parent, would not have been informed! I think about all the other parents and carers whose children this has happened to, on what seems to be a regular basis. Following the news about Child Q, I and my two other Lambeth colleagues—my hon....
