Pedicabs (London) Bill [Lords]: Clause 1 - Power to regulate pedicabs (26 Maw 2024)

Matt Rodda: Does the hon. Gentleman acknowledge that in a previous debate on the Bill a great deal of concern was raised by a number of hon. Members from across the House about the conduct of some pedicab drivers and the level of fees sometimes levied on passengers, some of whom were tourists who were unaware of the nature of the business they were getting into? I believe the hon. Member for Cities of...

RNLI Bicentenary — [Carolyn Harris in the Chair] (26 Maw 2024)

Matt Rodda: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Mrs Harris. I congratulate the hon. Member for Totnes (Anthony Mangnall) on his excellent and stirring speech about the service of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution across this country. I pay tribute to the RNLI: it is a wonderful service, and today’s speeches have been inspiring. I am here to say thank you on behalf of an inland...

Post Office (Horizon System) Offences Bill (20 Maw 2024)

Matt Rodda: My right hon. Friend is making an excellent and powerful speech, and I particularly concur with his description of the enormous challenges that many victims face. Does he agree that the nature of any review or policy development is particularly important? If we can find a way to speed up the compensation by dealing with the slightly less difficult cases first, it could benefit everyone and...

Post Office (Horizon System) Offences Bill (20 Maw 2024)

Matt Rodda: I thank the hon. Gentleman for his work on this issue and other issues protecting local post offices and looking at the range of services they can offer to the community. Has he had any further reflections about the role of post offices in communities? I also want to thank him specifically for the work he did to support my constituency. Perhaps, now that he has left the Government, he can...

Thames Water: Contingency Plans (15 Maw 2024)

Matt Rodda: Can the Minister advise me on the course of action where a water company appears not to be offering compensation where there has been an interruption in supply? Will he perhaps write to me on this matter? A large number of my constituents—several hundred people— have recently had a supply interruption. I inquired with Thames Water some weeks ago as to whether it will pay compensation, but...

Thames Water: Contingency Plans (15 Maw 2024)

Matt Rodda: I am grateful to the hon. Member for giving way. My constituents have suffered quite seriously from similar issues, including interruption to water supply to a large part of Reading recently and, indeed, considerable sewage discharges in the river, which, outrageously, are sometimes visible to passers-by who use our bridges and walk by the riverside.

Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill (15 Maw 2024)

Matt Rodda: My hon. Friend is making an excellent, thoughtful and well-researched speech. Does she agree that there is a need for greater public information and education, as previously mentioned in the debate, to reduce the risk of young age puppies being sold?

Pedicabs (London) Bill [Lords] (28 Chw 2024)

Matt Rodda: I am grateful to my hon. Friend for giving way. He is speaking very eloquently. I also welcomed the words from the Minister this afternoon. Does my hon. Friend agree that there is a very similar situation with other new forms of transport, such as e-scooters and e-motorbikes? Hopefully, there can be a similar discussion about the safety issues and about balancing the need for new forms of...

Leasehold and Freehold Reform Bill: New Clause 26 - LTA 1985: Crown application (27 Chw 2024)

Matt Rodda: My hon. Friend is making an excellent speech. Does he agree that part of the problem is that some of the freeholders are based overseas, and it is extremely difficult for leaseholders to track them down? This is an ongoing issue that I hope the Government will look into.

Leasehold and Freehold Reform Bill: New Clause 26 - LTA 1985: Crown application (27 Chw 2024)

Matt Rodda: Can the Minister assist me with a relatively unusual issue in my constituency? I have listened very carefully to his helpful speech. In the Loddon Park development on the edge of Woodley in my constituency, residents were sold properties only to discover in the small print of their contract, as my right hon. Friend the Member for Alyn and Deeside (Mark Tami) said, that they were expected to...

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Trade (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) Bill [Lords]: New Clause 5 - Review: Investor-State Dispute Settlement (20 Chw 2024)

Matt Rodda: I commend my hon. Friend’s speech. He is making an excellent point. This issue has been raised with me a number of times in my time as an MP, by both charities and other civil society groups. There is a great deal of concern about ISDS in the community, particularly, in my experience, from charities involved in development. My hon. Friend is making an excellent point in trying to address...

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Trade (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) Bill [Lords]: Clause 3 - Procurement (20 Chw 2024)

Matt Rodda: The Minister is very confident in his marshalling of evidence this afternoon. The Opposition remain deeply sceptical; would he like to give us—and the public—a reassurance, regarding the NHS and other key public services, that the new agreement will not lead to foreign providers undermining standards of care and replacing domestic or indeed NHS suppliers?

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Trade (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) Bill [Lords]: Clause 3 - Procurement (20 Chw 2024)

Matt Rodda: I hope that my hon. Friend will also press the Minister on the wider context. My hon. Friend highlights the important point made by my hon. Friends the Members for City of Chester and for Cardiff North, which is that the Government seem to be neglecting their responsibilities. There appears to be a contradiction in Government policy between what we have heard today and other aspects of UK...
