Scotland: Productive Forestry (28 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: My hon. Friend is a champion for this industry, and it is the UK Government’s ambition to increase planting across the United Kingdom. I know she is keen for productive forestry to be used to support the construction and manufacturing industries, which is also the Government’s ambition.

Scotland: Productive Forestry (28 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: Not only do I champion it, I plant trees myself.

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Scotland Office: Vodafone Group (21 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: As an open economy, this Government welcomes and encourages investment where it supports the Prime Minister’s goal of boosting UK growth and jobs, meets our stringent legal and regulatory requirements, and does not compromise our national security. The Government has robust powers under the National Security & Investment Act, which it introduced, to block or impose remedies on transactions...

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Law Officers: Scotland (19 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: I have received no representations from the Scottish Government in relation to a consultation on the proposed separation of the functions of the Lord Advocate.

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Scotland Office: Remote Working (13 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: The work of the Scotland Office is conducted in a number of different locations, be that at our London office; the UKG hub in Edinburgh; or engaging with stakeholders and communities across Scotland. Occupancy data for our London office is not an indicator of departmental performance. You can find out more about the work of the department and our delivery against our Priority Outcomes in our...

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Tourism: Scotland and West Midlands ( 9 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: Ministers and officials from this Department regularly meet with counterparts from across government to discuss the UK tourism industry. This engagement includes ongoing attendance at the Inter-Ministerial Group on the Visitor Economy where initiatives, such as those that promote cross-UK tourism, are explored.

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Cancer: Vaccination ( 6 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: I have raised this request with the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. I understand the Minister of State for Health and Social Care is in the process of writing to the Shadow Secretary of State for Health in relation to the named constituent.

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Sewage: Waste Disposal ( 1 Meh 2023)

Alister Jack: The Scotland Office leases space in two buildings, Dover House in London and Queen Elizabeth House in Edinburgh. These buildings are managed by the Government Property Agency and HMRC respectively, who would hold any information of this nature.

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Forced Marriage: Children (24 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: I am pleased that the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act recently came into force in England and Wales, and I note the important work and contribution from the Member for Mid Derbyshire. As a devolved matter, it is for the Scottish Government to decide on the age of marriage. Nonetheless, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Justice wrote to the then Scottish Cabinet...

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Marriage: Scotland (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: I am pleased that the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act recently obtained Royal Assent - and I thank my honourable Friend for her important work in this area. The Scottish Government is aware of the Act’s contents. As a devolved matter, it is for the Scottish Government to decide on the age of marriage. Nonetheless, I would encourage the Scottish Government to follow suit.

Written Answers — Scotland Office: Ferries: Rosyth (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: The operation of international ferry routes is primarily a commercial matter. Officials in the Department for Transport are in regular contact with Transport Scotland to monitor developments in the maritime market, including the Rosyth ferry proposals. I understand the companies involved remain engaged in feasibility studies to test commercial viability and we look forward to learning their...

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: As the UK Government in Scotland, we have an important role in promoting Scotland internationally. The Scotland Office, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Department for Business and Trade, and Scottish Development International work together to identify opportunities for trade and investment—a recent example being the Tartan Week celebrations held in New York.

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: Yes, of course I do, and I also welcome the Scottish Government’s deciding not to ban advertising, for instance, for whisky producers. It is simply the case that the UK Government work with the Scottish Government in promoting Scotland overseas, but what we do not like is when the Scottish Government—I know this is what the hon. Gentleman was getting at—stray into reserved areas such as...

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: The UK wants to promote Scotland’s food and drink industry and to promote renewables and the sale of renewables—for instance, to Vietnam—and we do that through trade deals. I say to the SNP: “Get behind the UK Government. Get behind the trade deals we’re doing. You’ve never found one you liked so far. Start supporting them!”

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: The hon. Gentleman should not be taking all the credit: that work is done by the United Kingdom Government. We have 282 embassies, high commissions and consulates in 180 countries, we work very hard promoting Scotland’s interests overseas and Scotland has a wonderful Foreign Secretary in the form of my right hon. Friend the Member for Braintree (James Cleverly).

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: Yes, my hon. Friend is of course right. The island communities have been terribly let down by this Scottish Government. I know he is referring to the ministerial direction yesterday to carry on with the second ferry. Ministers should always spend taxpayers’ money efficiently, even if it means losing face.

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: Yes, indeed. Scotland’s membership as part of the United Kingdom of those incredible organisations is just another advantage of being part of the United Kingdom.

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: I certainly do.

Scotland: Promoting Scotland Overseas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: As the hon. Gentleman will know from my submission to his Committee and its inquiry, that is not what I think. I think that the UK Government should work with the devolved Administrations to promote them, and to promote trade, overseas. I also believe that when the devolved Administrations are using our missions overseas, they should not be using them to promote their plans for a separation,...

Scotland: Highly Protected Marine Areas (17 Mai 2023)

Alister Jack: We are committed to working with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Scottish Government on our shared ambition to protect marine ecosystems. However, we also note legitimate concerns from the fishing industry about the impact that the designation of highly protected marine areas may have on Scotland’s coastal and island communities.
