Written Answers — Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Dogs: Republic of Ireland (16 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what discussions he has had with his counterparts in the Irish Government on tackling the smuggling of puppies from the Republic of Ireland into the UK.

Referendum on Scottish Independence — [Mr Adrian Bailey in the Chair] (13 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Bailey. Today’s debate is on two opposing petitions: one that argues in favour of another Scottish independence referendum and one that argues against. I am proud that the people of Dumfries and Galloway, whom I represent, voted by a factor of four to one in favour of the latter. For those of us who live in Scotland, these petitions are...

Referendum on Scottish Independence — [Mr Adrian Bailey in the Chair] (13 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: I shall make some progress first. That message resonated with Scots right across the country, quite simply because people are fed up with Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP putting their obsession with our constitution ahead of governing in the interests of Scotland. Today’s debate is not about whether Scottish independence would be a good thing; I argue strongly that it would not be. It is...

Referendum on Scottish Independence — [Mr Adrian Bailey in the Chair] (13 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: Yes, I do agree—[Laughter]—as hon. Members will not be surprised to hear. Before becoming a Member of Parliament, I spent 30 years working in business, and I can tell hon. Members from my own experience and from speaking to many businessmen and women across Scotland that the business community will not thank anyone if Scotland is dragged into another divisive referendum, creating...

Referendum on Scottish Independence — [Mr Adrian Bailey in the Chair] (13 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: All I will say to that is that if I had my way, we would wait even longer. For that reason, I shall conclude by paraphrasing the former SNP Member for Hamilton: stop the grandstanding, Scotland wants to get on.

Referendum on Scottish Independence — [Mr Adrian Bailey in the Chair] (13 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: Will the hon. Gentleman give way?

Referendum on Scottish Independence — [Mr Adrian Bailey in the Chair] (13 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: The hon. Gentleman mentions the new Under-Secretary of State moving from Perth and Kinross to that job. Does he think that it is appropriate for the former Member for Gordon to move to RT?

Referendum on Scottish Independence — [Mr Adrian Bailey in the Chair] (13 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: If that is what the SNP genuinely believes, why did it hold a vote in the Scottish Parliament on a second independence referendum when opinion polls showed that less than 50% of people were in favour of having one? Of course, that was an Achilles heel for the SNP going into the last general election.

Puppy Smuggling ( 1 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: I draw to the hon. Lady’s attention that the problem is not just in Europe or Lithuania, but very much in southern Ireland. Only this summer, a father and son drowned off the coast of Galloway with a boat full of puppies, smuggling them across the Irish sea. Does she acknowledge that we must pay attention to southern Ireland and the puppy farms? Those farms operate on an agricultural basis,...

Puppy Smuggling ( 1 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: My hon. Friend raises prosecutions. A £500 fine was recently handed out in my constituency, yet huge amounts of money are made out of this industry. Under Operation Delphin, which has been operating at the port of Cairnryan in my constituency, more than 500 puppies have been seized and returned to puppy farms in southern Ireland in the past year. Does he welcome that huge success, and the...

Puppy Smuggling ( 1 Tach 2017)

Alister Jack: Does my hon. Friend agree that while the legislation may be fit for purpose for breeding puppies, it is not for their transportation?

Oral Answers to Questions — Scotland: Borderlands Growth Deal (25 Hyd 2017)

Alister Jack: What progress he has made on the borderlands growth deal initiative in Dumfries and Galloway.

Oral Answers to Questions — Scotland: Borderlands Growth Deal (25 Hyd 2017)

Alister Jack: Hear, hear to that. Will my right hon. Friend commit to ensuring that local communities have the opportunity to feed their thoughts into what the final deal will look like?

The Rohingya and the Myanmar Government: Sale of Puppies (17 Hyd 2017)

Alister Jack: The hon. Gentleman describes very well the puppy farms, which are disgraceful and operate in agricultural terms in southern Ireland. Does he agree that Operation Delphin at the port of Cairnryan in my constituency, which to date has led to the seizure and return of over 500 puppies, has been a huge success? Does he also welcome the fact that that pilot scheme has been extended for another...
