UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: Instead of taking the Opposition’s approach, we are taking an approach that is pro-growth, pro-business and pro the investment we need for our country’s energy security.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: My right hon. Friend makes an extremely good point. The reality is that we cannot tax our way to growth. The policy that I am setting out today is all about helping people with their energy costs, as I promised, and making sure that we have the long-term energy supplies that we need for our country.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: What we are doing is the important work to help people and businesses get through this winter and next winter while fixing Britain’s long-term energy supply.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I have already given way on a number of occasions. I will give way later, and ask Members to hold off a bit longer. This is the moment to be bold. We are facing a global energy crisis and there are no cost-free options. There will be a cost to this intervention.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I thank my right hon. Friend for his point. I am sure that the Chancellor of the Exchequer is listening intently to his point ahead of the fiscal statement later this month.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I want to make some progress on explaining how we will defray the cost of this intervention, which I think might answer some hon. Members’ questions before they ask them. We will defray the cost of this intervention by, first, ramping up supply. Following on from the successful vaccine taskforce, we have created a new energy supply taskforce under the leadership of Maddy McTernan. The...

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: My hon. Friend is absolutely right that small modular reactors are a very important part of our energy mix. They are produced here in the United Kingdom. They will help to boost growth as well as boosting our energy security.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I will take a few more interventions in a few minutes, but I ask Members please to let me make progress on my speech. Secondly, today’s actions will deliver substantial benefits to our economy—boosting growth, which increases tax receipts, and giving certainty to business. This intervention is expected to curb inflation by up to five percentage points, bringing a reduction in the cost of...

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I am completely committed to net zero by 2050 and I will be saying more about how we will be achieving that later in this speech. As well as dealing with the immediate situation we face, we are also dealing with the root causes.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: At the same time as introducing the energy price guarantee, we are also providing families with £400 and providing extra support to the vulnerable. Vulnerable families will be receiving that extra support. I want to move on to why we are in the situation we are in now. The fact is that energy policy over the past decades has not focused enough on securing supply. [Interruption.] I do not...

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I do agree with the right hon. Gentleman and I am coming to the point about shale gas in a minute. I can assure him that this policy will apply in Northern Ireland and those benefits will be open to the people of Northern Ireland, as part of the United Kingdom. As well as the action that I am announcing today, we will use these two years ahead of us to make sure that the United Kingdom is...

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: My hon. Friend is right: the reason we are in this difficult situation is Putin’s appalling war in Ukraine. But we do need to make sure that our energy supplies are more resilient and secure, so that we are never in this situation again and so that we cannot be subject to global energy prices and the actions of dictators. We are delivering a stable environment that gives investors the...

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I will make a bit more progress and then I will give way. We will end the moratorium on extracting our huge reserves of shale, which could get gas flowing as soon as six months from now where there is local support for it. We will launch Great British Nuclear later this month, putting us on a path to deliver up to a quarter of our electricity generation with nuclear by 2050.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: We are in a very difficult situation and I am committed, as Prime Minister, to doing everything it takes to resolve the situation, to helping people with their energy bills and to making sure we have security of supply for the long term.

UK Energy Costs ( 8 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I have taken a lot of interventions and need to make progress on the speech. As a result of these steps on shale and nuclear, and the acceleration of renewables, I am today setting a new ambition for our country. Far from being dependent on the global energy market and the actions of malign actors, we will make sure that the UK is a net energy exporter by 2040. My right hon. Friend the...

Prime Minister: Engagements ( 7 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I am honoured to take my place as Prime Minister in this House and to take on responsibility at a vital time for our country. I am determined to deliver for everybody across our United Kingdom. I will work constructively with all Members of this House to tackle the challenges we face. This morning, I had meetings with ministerial colleagues and others. In addition to my duties in this House,...

Prime Minister: Engagements ( 7 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I congratulate the hon. Lady on her first Prime Minister’s question. What I am determined to do as Prime Minister is to make sure we have an economy with high wages and high-skilled jobs, and the way I will achieve that is through reducing taxes on people across our country and boosting economic growth. That is the way that we will make sure we get the investment and the jobs that people...

Prime Minister: Engagements ( 7 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: My right hon. Friend is absolutely right. The hospitality industry is vital, and I will make sure that our energy plan, which will help support businesses and people with the immediate price crisis, as well as making sure there are long-term supplies available, will help businesses as well as helping individual households.

Prime Minister: Engagements ( 7 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I thank the right hon. and learned Gentleman for his welcome. I hope that we will be able to work together, particularly in areas we agree on. I know that we have had strong support from the Opposition in opposing Vladimir Putin’s appalling war in Ukraine, and I want us to continue to stand up to that appalling Russian aggression, which has led to the energy crisis we face now. I am against...

Prime Minister: Engagements ( 7 Med 2022)

Elizabeth Truss: I understand that people across our country are struggling with the cost of living, and they are struggling with their energy bills. That is why I as Prime Minister will take immediate action to help people with the cost of their energy bills. I will be making an announcement to this House on that tomorrow, and giving people certainty to make sure that they are able to get through this...
