Oral Answers to Questions — Royal Air Force.: Singapore (Disturbances). ( 8 Mai 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: While the police were engaged in preventing by peaceful methods the mustering of an unauthorised and therefore illegal political demonstration organised by Communists in Singapore on the 1st May, a picket of 20 police, with a European Inspector, were attacked by a crowd of some 400 Chinese armed with heavy billets of wood and bottles. A warning shot was ignored, and the crowd struck down a...

Oral Answers to Questions — Royal Air Force.: Singapore (Disturbances). ( 8 Mai 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: The Chinese workers have asked for increased wages and have received those increased wages. In this case the agitation was a purely political one.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Possession of Arms (Arrests). ( 1 Mai 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: I think my hon. and gallant Friend must be referring to recent events at the settlement of Ben Shemen. Eleven Jews, including the Director of the Agricultural School, were arrested in connection with the seizure of arms in the settlement, and were tried on the charge of being jointly in possession of arms, ammunition and bombs contrary to the provisions of Emergency Regulation 8 C. The...

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Possession of Arms (Arrests). ( 1 Mai 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: These particular secret arms were quite unnecessary for defence because there were other authorised arms provided for the defence of the settlements.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Possession of Arms (Arrests). ( 1 Mai 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: Under the Regulation the secret possession of them was contrary to the law of Palestine.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Possession of Arms (Arrests). ( 1 Mai 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: 105 Jews are serving terms of imprisonment in Palestine for offences in connection with the possession of arms, bombs and explosives during the period April, 1936, to the present date. In all these cases the sentence exceeds 12 months. No sentences have been reduced for the reason suggested.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Possession of Arms (Arrests). ( 1 Mai 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: Stores of arms were provided by the local administration for the proper protection of these settlements and the possession of these other firearms is quite unnecessary for this purpose. As regards the other question, I do not think the time has arrived as suggested, particularly as a number of the offences have been committed since the outbreak of war.

Oral Answers to Questions — Northern Rhodesia (Industrial Dispute, Inquiry). (25 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: The Commission will be composed as follows: Chairman: Sir John Forster, Deputy Umpire under the United Kingdom Unemployment Insurance Act of 1935, who has had great experience as a chairman of industrial inquiries. Other members: Sir Walter Buchanan-Smith, formerly Lieutenant-Governor, Southern Provinces, Nigeria; and Mr. A. Dalgleish, a national official of the Transport and General Workers'...

Oral Answers to Questions — Northern Rhodesia (Industrial Dispute, Inquiry). (25 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: In reply to the first part of the Question, I must leave that to the people on the spot. In reply to the second part, we are proceeding as fast as we can with the carrying out of these recommendations. With regard to the third part, I think that the terms of reference of the Commission are very wide, and certainly a great many of these subjects will fall within them.

Oral Answers to Questions — Royal Air Force.: Mombasa. (24 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: The answer to the first part of the Question is in the affirmative. The Labour Department has been reorganised and strengthened, and I am now awaiting the recommendations of the Governor as to the best method of providing proper housing for native labour in Mombasa, and the other matters to which the Commission has drawn attention.

Oral Answers to Questions — Royal Air Force.: Mombasa. (24 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: Yes, Sir. We are dealing with the grievances as rapidly as we can.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine (Parcels). (23 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: I would refer my hon. Friend to my reply to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for South Nottingham (Mr. Markham) on 16th April, in which I stated that I was in communication with the High Commissioner as to the possibility of granting some duty concession on parcels sent to members of His Majesty's Forces serving in Palestine. I am awaiting the High Commissioner's views on the subject.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine (Parcels). (23 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: I think my hon. and gallant Friend had better await the final decision when I have considered the circumstances as presented by the High Commissioner.

Oral Answers to Questions — Royal Navy.: Virgin Islands (Tobacco-Growing). (17 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: In April, 1939, I received an application for a loan of £3,000 from the Colonial Development Fund to finance this undertaking. Certain difficulties were apparent, particularly as regards marketing, and I felt unable to place the matter before the Colonial Development Advisory Committee until some means of overcoming them could be devised. In the meantime, loans totalling £1,000 have been...

Oral Answers to Questions — Royal Navy.: Virgin Islands (Tobacco-Growing). (17 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: As I have said, we are encouraging this tobacco-growing, by giving assistance from the local Government's funds, so clearly there is no objection in principle.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Hebrew Newspapers. (10 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: I have no information about this matter, but am asking the High Commissioner for a report.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Hebrew Newspapers. (10 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: This point had not been brought to my notice until the hon. Member put down his Question, I think yesterday, and I am telegraphing for information as soon as it is possible to get it.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Hebrew Newspapers. (10 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: I have no-information about this matter, but am asking the High Commissioner for a report.

Oral Answers to Questions — Palestine.: Hebrew Newspapers. (10 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: I will certainly ask that, but I think I can already give the answer in the negative.

Oral Answers to Questions — Royal Navy.: Illegal Immigrants. ( 3 Ebr 1940)

Mr Malcolm Macdonald: As I made clear in my reply to the hon. Member for Ipswich (Mr. Stokes) on 20th March, only a portion of the illegal immigrants recently landed in Palestine who are held in detention camps are suspected of being German agents. While the High Commissioner has strong reasons for his suspicions, inquiries have not yet produced conclusive proof.
