Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: London Olympics Bill: Clause 17 - Advertising regulations (18 Hyd 2005)

Maria Miller: When does the Minister plan to identify the areas around the many venues? Understanding the timing that he has in mind will help us and perhaps allay our concerns.

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: London Olympics Bill: Clause 17 - Advertising regulations (18 Hyd 2005)

Maria Miller: I am the vice-chairman of the all-party advertising group, and I declare that as an interest. All hon. Members here want to ensure the success of the 2012 London Olympics. Our amendments are designed to clarify certain aspects of the Bill to help ensure that we strike a balance between protecting the value of sponsoring and successfully using the Olympics as a catalyst for the wider economic...

Business of the House (13 Hyd 2005)

Maria Miller: Pregnant women in my constituency cannot get 12-week ultrasound scans on the NHS and are being told to get them privately, despite the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence issuing guidelines in October 2003 stating that all women should have this service available to them. Indeed, in neighbouring Frimley Park and Guildford, the service is available. I therefore call on the...

Emergency Services (Regionalisation) (12 Hyd 2005)

Maria Miller: I would like to add a little depth to this point. I am concerned about how dismissive Ministers and Labour Members have been about the concerns of the Fire Brigades Union. I recently received a delegation from the Hampshire FBU and heard its concerns about regional control rooms in our area and particularly about the effects that they would have on my constituency. It would affect rural areas...

Orders of the Day — London Olympics Bill (21 Gor 2005)

Maria Miller: I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this debate. I shall keep my comments brief to allow other hon. Members to make their contributions, but first I want to congratulate the hon. Member for Cheadle (Mark Hunter) on his excellent maiden speech. I had the opportunity to visit his constituency recently and can confirm that it has many beautiful and leafy roads for people to walk...

Development (Basingstoke) (13 Gor 2005)

Maria Miller: Let me clarify my point. I am not arguing about building houses. As the Minister pointed out, there has been great diligence in respect of building houses in my constituency. The point is that Basingstoke is not getting sufficient investment to ensure that the people who move into those houses, or the people who are already resident there, are able to continue to enjoy the quality of life...

Development (Basingstoke) (13 Gor 2005)

Maria Miller: The Minister says that there are "gaps to fill" in investment in infrastructure. Perhaps he could clarify whether the Government intend to fill those gaps and fund that?

Development (Basingstoke) (13 Gor 2005)

Maria Miller: I initiated this debate because the problems associated with development are an important issue facing my constituency today, and it truly resonates with many other communities throughout the south of England. It was also an important issue during the general election campaign. There was overwhelming concern that house building plans are not necessarily achieving the Government's objective of...

Telecommunications Masts (28 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: I am here to express some of the concern and anger felt by a great number of my constituents who have been affected by mobile phone masts in recent months and years. In many ways, they feel powerless to get any action when an application is made to put a mobile phone mast in the vicinity of their homes or of other services that they may use. I am in an interesting situation, as my borough...

Telecommunications Masts (28 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: My hon. Friend is right. As New Scientist stated, a fourfold increase in the number of masts is to be expected in coming years, which would be equivalent to about 200 extra masts in each constituency. More must be done to plan for that. The presumption in favour of development in the current planning system must be changed, and our constituents' frustration must be listened to.

Written Answers — Transport: House Building (Traffic) (27 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how plans to reduce the level of motorway noise will be adjusted to take account of changes in traffic flow resulting from increased levels of house building in the South East.

Written Answers — Transport: House Building (Traffic) (27 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the likely effects of the Government's house building targets for the South East on (a) traffic flows and (b) consequent noise levels on the M3 between junctions 5 and 7.

Written Answers — Transport: M3 (27 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when noise levels between Junction 5 and 7 on the M3 were last monitored; and whether there have been changes in the noise levels over time.

Written Answers — Transport: M3 (27 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans are in place to reduce the levels of motorway noise for residents living around junctions 5, 6 and 7 of the M3; and when those measures will be completed.

Written Answers — Treasury: Tax Credits (27 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people have been in receipt of an incorrect level of tax credit in Basingstoke; how many of these could not reasonably have been expected to know that a mistake had been made; and if he will make a statement.

Written Answers — Health: Fertility Treatment (27 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many couples have been funded for (a) one, (b) two and (c) more than two cycles of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment by (i) North Hampshire Primary Care Trust and (ii) primary care trusts in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Strategic Health Authority area in each year since 2000–01; how many couples she expects will receive funding for (A)...

Orders of the Day — Regulation of Financial Services (Land Transactions) Bill (23 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: First, I congratulate the hon. Member for Ealing, Acton and Shepherd's Bush (Mr. Slaughter) on his excellent maiden speech. I stood in the same shoes not so long ago and I know how it feels. I have rather fond, if painful, memories of the hon. Gentleman's constituency, as I gave birth to my third child in Queen Charlotte's hospital. Interestingly enough, it is located next to Wormwood Scrubs...

Business of the House (23 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: The Leader of the House will be aware that the Secretary of State for Health has said that all primary care trusts should offer one cycle of in vitro fertilisation treatment for eligible couples by April this year. A £10 million funding shortfall in my North Hampshire primary care trust, which covers the Basingstoke area, means that it cannot offer any IVF treatment at all now or in the...

Orders of the Day — Consumer Credit Bill ( 9 Meh 2005)

Maria Miller: Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker, for giving me the opportunity to make my maiden speech. I congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Tunbridge Wells (Greg Clark) on making what I am sure you will agree, was a distinguished and passionate speech in the best traditions of the House. It is a great honour to have been elected by the people of Basingstoke to be their Member of Parliament....
