Women’s State Pension Age: Ombudsman Report (16 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: The right hon. Gentleman makes a very important point. Looking at the experience of other compensation schemes—the one that comes to my mind is the Icelandic trawlermen compensation scheme—it is clear that the longer we leave these things, and the longer the passage of time, the more difficult it gets to resolve them. Does that not underline the need for speed here?

Transport: Helicopter Search and Rescue (16 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: What recent discussions he has had with helicopter search and rescue operators on the adequacy of response times.

Transport: Helicopter Search and Rescue (16 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: I thank the Minister for his answer—he seems to be aware of the situation—but a new threat to search and rescue response times is emerging, namely the poor and deteriorating industrial relations between Bristow’s management and its staff. As we speak, members of the British Airline Pilots’ Association who work in SAR cohort 2 are on strike, having been driven to it by a management who...

Criminal Justice Bill: New Clause 86 - Creating purported sexual image of adult (15 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: Before the Minister moves on—I apologise if she has addressed this and I missed it—could I get from her an explanation about Government new clause 102, which seeks to remove the protections of the Human Rights Act by effectively excluding the defence of lawful or reasonable excuses? This is now the fourth piece of legislation that the Government have introduced that will remove the...

Written Answers — Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office: Hong Kong: Visits Abroad (15 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: To ask the Deputy Foreign Secretary, if he will make an assessment of the potential impact of the visit by the Minister for the Indo-Pacific to Hong Kong on relations with China.

Justice: Court Case Backlogs (14 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: What recent assessment he has made of the potential implications for his policies of the case backlog in the criminal and civil courts.

Justice: Court Case Backlogs (14 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: For anyone who has been a victim of crime, delays in getting cases into court add massively to the stress and anxiety they experience. What would the Secretary of State say to any Member whose local magistrates court had 1,954 criminal cases waiting to be heard at the end of December 2023? Would he say that a backlog of that scale was acceptable?

Risk-based Exclusion (13 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: I am grateful to the right hon. Gentleman for giving way. He is of course right about the constitutionality of this, but we all know that, in practical terms in recent times, things have been done differently and that people have been excluded by agreement however obtained from the Whips. Surely what we have here is something that would be more transparent and would apply with equal measure...

Risk-based Exclusion (13 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: Did the right hon. Lady’s Committee give any consideration to the fact that what constitutes a charge, and what that means in terms of procedure, is different in Scotland from what it is south of the border? In England it is the initiation of criminal proceedings; in Scotland that decision is taken at a later stage by the procurator fiscal.

Palestinians: Visa Scheme — [Martin Vickers in the Chair] (13 Mai 2024)

Alistair Carmichael: I have to say that Orkney and Shetland does not boast the same ethnic diversity as Bolton, but I have been overwhelmed by the number of emails that I have received on this issue. The lesson to take from that is that British people as a whole, whatever their ethnic background or heritage, see people in harm’s way and want to help them. That is why there is the scale of support for a visa...
