Surrogate Parents (Leave, Pay and Allowance Arrangements): Clause 1 — Lord Chancellor’s functions (17 Ebr 2012)

Glenda Jackson: I, too, welcome the list that the Lord Chancellor read out with regard to domestic violence. Looking at my constituency, I am concerned about where those women will go to obtain that advice, because we are seeing reductions in the services currently provided by citizens advice bureaux and law centres, for example, as a result of the changes to legal aid. There is a gap between the one who...

Surrogate Parents (Leave, Pay and Allowance Arrangements): Clause 1 — Lord Chancellor’s functions (17 Ebr 2012)

Glenda Jackson: Is the Secretary of State actually arguing that the best way of getting a level playing field is to deny everyone any kind of legal aid? That seems to be the thrust of his argument.

Royal Assent: Assisted Suicide (27 Maw 2012)

Glenda Jackson: I entirely agree with my hon. Friend, but equally she should not attribute too much to the Commission on Assisted Dying, as it was a self-appointed commission that was funded mainly by a pressure group that holds a very clear view of the existing law and how it wishes to see it changed. I also point out to my hon. Friend that this House at the very beginning of this Session argued for...

Opposition Day — [Un-Allotted Day]: Living Standards ( 5 Maw 2012)

Glenda Jackson: Will the Minister tell us how his Government are helping the poorest in our society? Hundreds of families in my constituency are going to lose working family tax credit and will not be able to increase their hours. They are facing the possibility of losing their homes because of the cap on housing benefit, and of losing services because of the cuts to local authorities. The people who are...

Written Answers — Treasury: Child Care Tax Credit ( 5 Maw 2012)

Glenda Jackson: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many families will no longer receive childcare support as a result of the increase in the hours limit for eligibility for working tax credit.

Written Answers — Education: Contact Orders: Grandparents (27 Chw 2012)

Glenda Jackson: To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will take steps to reform family law to provide greater access rights to grandparents when families break up; and if he will make a statement.

Business of the House ( 9 Chw 2012)

Glenda Jackson: The Leader of the House will be aware of today’s report from the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service—CAFCASS—highlighting a dramatic increase in the number of children being taken into care due to parental neglect. One of the most effective programmes in assisting dysfunctional and problem families is early intervention, yet these programmes are suffering across the...

Written Answers — Education: Academies: Primary Education (31 Ion 2012)

Glenda Jackson: To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will publish the evidence setting out the effects on attainment of converting primary schools into academies; and if he will make a statement.

Written Answers — Education: Academies (25 Ion 2012)

Glenda Jackson: To ask the Secretary of State for Education what consultation is required to ensure a change to academy status is voluntary.

Oral Answers to Questions — Work and Pensions: Universal Credit (IT Systems) (23 Ion 2012)

Glenda Jackson: This morning on the “Today” programme, the Secretary of State declared that he knew where and who the families were who would be most adversely affected by the introduction of universal credit. They will lose their homes, their children will lose their schools and they will have to find new medical treatments. Why does he need that system, and has he begun the process of informing those...

Written Answers — Treasury: Children: Day Care (19 Ion 2012)

Glenda Jackson: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the amount of revenue that would be generated by (a) one parent and (b) two parent families returning to full-time work through the funding of 15 hours of nursery provision for three and four year olds; and if he will make a statement.

Written Answers — Treasury: Children: Day Care (18 Ion 2012)

Glenda Jackson: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consider making childcare fully tax deductable; and if he will make a statement.

[Sir Roger Gale in the Chair] — Care of the Dying (17 Ion 2012)

Glenda Jackson: May I congratulate the hon. Member for Enfield, Southgate (Mr Burrowes)on obtaining this debate? I agree with the bulk of what he said. There is something drastically wrong with a society that can contemplate legalising something that is, to my mind, murder. A change in the law would inevitably define the value of a life as dependent upon physical or mental capacity. One of the greatest...

Oral Answers to Questions — Health: High-speed Rail (10 Ion 2012)

Glenda Jackson: While thanking the right hon. Lady for switching on the green light, I note that she referred in her statement to “a package of measures to reinforce confidence in properties above tunnels”. That issue affects many of my constituents. When and to whom should my constituents make representations to have their concerns calmed?

Business, Innovation and Skills: Green Investment Bank ( 8 Rha 2011)

Glenda Jackson: What recent progress he has made on the Green investment bank.

Business, Innovation and Skills: Green Investment Bank ( 8 Rha 2011)

Glenda Jackson: There are reports that the Government have dramatically lowered their funding for this potentially innovative venture, so when, if ever, will what threatens to become a mere piggy bank be open for business?

Opposition Day — [Un-allotted Day]: Living Standards (30 Tach 2011)

Glenda Jackson: Yesterday, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, as for the last 18 months and assiduously supported by his Back-Bench colleagues, blamed our flatlining economy, constantly rising unemployment and failure of small businesses to obtain loans from banks on the enormous debts that this country was left by the previous Labour Government. His other argument was that the Labour Government had failed to...

Opposition Day — [Un-allotted Day]: Living Standards (30 Tach 2011)

Glenda Jackson: Will the hon. Lady give way?

Opposition Day — [Un-allotted Day]: Living Standards (30 Tach 2011)

Glenda Jackson: No one would disagree with the hon. Lady’s argument, but unfortunately the Government have made the provision of early intervention virtually impossible by removing the ring fence from Sure Start funds, and removing the other support systems that are necessary to produce the results that she and every other Member desires.
