Debate on the Address: Foreign Affairs and Defence (18 Gor 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: I join many others in congratulating Members on their maiden speeches—they were so much better than my own—but as we are short of time, let me move back to the topic of this debate, which is defence and foreign affairs. While I congratulate the incoming Government on their success, and we wish them well in the spirit of national service, there are serious concerns arising already from the...

Business of the House (18 Gor 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: The last Conservative Government provided £213 million of funding for the Western Link road to complete the orbital route around Norwich, but during the election campaign I was concerned to hear rumours that Labour might axe it. Can the Leader of the House provide a statement quickly to give reassurance to the people of Broadland and Fakenham, and Norfolk more widely, that this much-needed...

Science, Innovation and Technology: Internet Connectivity (22 Mai 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: Fast internet connections are just as important in rural areas such as Broadland and Fakenham as they are in the rest of the country. I welcome the Government’s gigabit project. In Norfolk, it is rolling out 62,000 new connections and unlocking another 45,000 from the commercial sector, but will the Minister explain why it is taking so long and how we can accelerate the project even more?

Arrests and Prison Capacity (22 Mai 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: I am glad to hear that the contingency contained in the letter was not required. We can tell how tough this Government are being on crime and criminals by the very heavy population in our prison estate. The long-term solution is to build more prisons. Can the Minister update us on when he estimates the prison building programme will catch up with the prison population?

Defence: Defence Sector Competitiveness (20 Mai 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: What steps he is taking to increase the competitiveness of the UK’s defence sector.

Defence: Defence Sector Competitiveness (20 Mai 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: Last week, we heard an announcement about the development of a radio wave drone killer. How is the integrated procurement model encouraging and accelerating the development of that novel technology?

Written Answers — Ministry of Justice: Question (14 Mai 2024)

Scotland: Protection of Free Speech ( 1 Mai 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: The Scottish Government’s Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021 came into force this month and is already having a chilling impact on free speech. What lessons can the UK Government learn from the introduction of this poor legislation in Scotland?

Off-Road Vehicles (Registration) Bill (19 Ebr 2024)

Jerome Mayhew: I extend my sympathy and that of the whole House to the family of David Gow. I have suffered personally as a result of the actions of quad bikes and motorbikes, although my experience pales into insignificance in comparison with the consequences that the Gow family have suffered. Before I came into the House, I ran an outdoor leisure company that had 36 locations around the United Kingdom. We...
