Selaine Saxby: If he will list his official engagements for Wednesday 17 April.

Prime Minister: Engagements (17 Ebr 2024)

Selaine Saxby: Does my right hon. Friend agree that towns such as Barnstaple—the main transport hub in North Devon, serving hundreds of square miles—should have a fully functioning bus station? Liberal Democrat-run North Devon Council has not reopened ours since the pandemic, leaving residents out in the cold with no public facilities. Does my right hon. Friend agree that, as people start to feel the...

Food Waste and Food Distribution — [Valerie Vaz in the Chair] (16 Ebr 2024)

Selaine Saxby: It is a pleasure to see you in the Chair, Ms Vaz. I congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Stoke-on-Trent Central (Jo Gideon) on securing today’s important debate. As she mentioned, 4.6 million tonnes of edible food are wasted in UK households annually. Around a quarter of that food waste is because too much food has been prepared, cooked or served. I have been a big supporter of...

Selaine Saxby: What steps her Department is taking to support floating offshore wind projects in the Celtic sea.

Energy Security and Net Zero: Floating Offshore Wind (16 Ebr 2024)

Selaine Saxby: The White Cross project in the Celtic sea has a cable due to come ashore in my constituency, and it advises me that it is unable to agree compensation to businesses disrupted by these works due to a lack of Government guidance. Will my right hon. Friend meet me—and, ideally, come to see where the project is due to make landfall—to find an alternative cable route, and if not, will she...

Defence: Defence Jobs (25 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: What steps his Department is taking to support defence jobs.

Defence: Defence Jobs (25 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: Would my hon. Friend agree that MOD procurement from small British companies in rural areas such as North Devon can significantly increase defence-related jobs there, and enhance the local economy, especially when those jobs are in high-wage research and development and manufacturing industries? Will he commit to ensuring that the additional high-skilled jobs and economic benefits resulting...

Women and Equalities: Topical Questions (20 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: If she will make a statement on her departmental responsibilities.

Women and Equalities: Topical Questions (20 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: My young disabled constituent Ella Wakley in Braunton goes to college, but her blue badge is accepted on buses only after 9.30 am, which is too late, so she has to pay for herself and her travel assistant. What steps is my right hon. Friend taking to ensure that improve accessibility for people such as Ella, who are trying to get on with their everyday lives?

Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill (15 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: I thank the Minister and my right hon. and hon. Friends who have spoken today. I also thank my team for all the work that they have put in behind the scenes to get to this point today, including Tara Benniman, Emily Gordon and Alice Richards, who is on maternity leave, watching at home with baby Luke and cat Beany. I also remind Members that Pixie the one-eyed spaniel and Bruce the French...

Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill (15 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: I thank the right hon. Lady for her kind words, but she clearly does not know me very well; I never stop pushing.

Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill (15 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: As I said in my speech, this is not covered by the Bill, and the British Veterinary Association is quite comfortable that it is not fully included and that the EFRA Committee is continuing its work in this area.

Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill (15 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: I beg to move, That the Bill be now read a Second time. Pets are a part of our family. They provide support and companionship when we need it most. In time-honoured Friday tradition, I would like to name my own pets, from my childhood cat Perdita through to Phoebe, who I adopted while I lived in the States, my yellow Labradors Harry and George, and my current much-adored fox red Labrador, Henry.

Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill (15 Maw 2024)

Selaine Saxby: That is an excellent intervention. I will come to ferrets, but unfortunately I have not had the pleasure of one at home myself. The companionship of pets was highly valued during the covid pandemic, when there was a surge in demand for puppies and kittens, which unfortunately led to even more upsetting cases of pet smuggling in the UK. During covid, legal commercial imports of dogs rose by...
