Paternity Leave (Bereavement) Bill (26 Ebr 2024)

Darren Henry: I could not be more delighted that the Bill has finally reached this stage today. I of course put on record my most sincere thanks to the hon. Member for Ogmore (Chris Elmore). I was delighted when he was selected in the private Member’s Bill ballot and agreed to take forward this Bill. He has worked incredibly hard to get it to this point, and I am grateful for his and his team’s work...

High Streets (Designation, Review and Improvement Plan) Bill (26 Ebr 2024)

Darren Henry: High streets are essential to our towns. They act as social hubs for our communities, and they attract people, which results in money being spent in our local economies. Across the UK, we have all seen high streets decline over the last decade. This can be put down to multiple factors, such as online shopping, energy costs and the pandemic. All of these things, and more, have meant that high...

Flood Recovery Framework — [Clive Efford in the Chair] (17 Ebr 2024)

Darren Henry: In Nottinghamshire we had Storm Babet and Storm Henk in quick succession. The Minister mentioned that businesses were able to receive grants, but they were not able to receive them twice. Had the storms happened in two separate years they would have done. What are the Government doing to address that?

Flood Recovery Framework — [Clive Efford in the Chair] (17 Ebr 2024)

Darren Henry: I thank my right hon. Friend for securing the debate. My constituency saw devastating flooding to homes and businesses during Storms Babet and Henk. Each time such storms occur, the same areas of Broxtowe are severely damaged. Does he agree that we must act now, not just to compensate, but to ensure that we mitigate against that level of damage occurring in the future?

Written Answers — Department of Health and Social Care: Pharmacy: Licensing (27 Maw 2024)

Darren Henry: To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, whether he is taking steps to reduce the time taken to grant licences to pharmacies applying to open new premises.

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Shared Parental Leave and Pay (Bereavement) Bill Committee: Clause 1 - Shared parental leave: entitlement in the event of death of mother (20 Maw 2024)

Darren Henry: It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Mr Paisley. I thank the hon. Member for Ogmore and will keep my remarks brief as I know we do not have much time.

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Shared Parental Leave and Pay (Bereavement) Bill Committee: Clause 1 - Shared parental leave: entitlement in the event of death of mother (20 Maw 2024)

Darren Henry: As the hon. Member knows, I am delighted that the Bill has got to this stage. For years now, I have pushed to make this vital change in law, following a local surgery in Broxtowe with my constituent, Aaron. I agree with the amendments put forward, and I am grateful for the work undertaken by the hon. Member to achieve this level of support. It is important that he is taking the Bill through...

Income Tax (Charge) (12 Maw 2024)

Darren Henry: I am sure that many of my constituents will be delighted and relieved at the cut in national insurance. It is right that individuals keep more of their hard-earned money. Does my hon. Friend agree that we must continue to look for responsible ways to ensure that those who are working hard and contributing to our economy keep as much of their wages as possible?

Education: Topical Questions (11 Maw 2024)

Darren Henry: If she will make a statement on her departmental responsibilities.

Education: Topical Questions (11 Maw 2024)

Darren Henry: I recently visited Fairfield Spencer Academy in my Broxtowe constituency, where I met Craig Jones, who is doing good work with the Junior Adventures Group, a leading provider of school-age childcare. During my visit, I observed staff providing crucial support to children beyond regular school hours. However, it is evident that that level of support is not consistent around the country, and...

Shared Parental Leave and Pay (Bereavement) Bill: Instruction ( 5 Maw 2024)

Darren Henry: When Aaron came to my constituency surgery with his three-week-old son, Tim, in his arms—his wife sadly died in childbirth—he had been working for a company for less than six months so he was not entitled to shared parental leave. Does the shadow Minister agree that this will affect the very small number of people a year in that situation? It will not be a significant burden on businesses...

Independent School Fees: VAT (21 Chw 2024)

Darren Henry: It is pleasure to serve under your chairship, Mr Henderson. I thank my hon. Friend the Member for Northampton South (Andrew Lewer) for bringing forward this debate. I will focus on the consequences of removing the current VAT exemption for independent schools. It is clear that this change would lead to a rise in school fees, as schools are forced to pass on the cost to parents in order to...

Transport: Road Resurfacing ( 8 Chw 2024)

Darren Henry: What funding his Department is providing for road resurfacing.

Transport: Road Resurfacing ( 8 Chw 2024)

Darren Henry: May I associate myself with the Secretary of State’s remarks wishing His Majesty the King a speedy recovery? Potholes in Broxtowe are incredibly bad; my constituents raise this issue all the time. The ongoing situation has been compounded by multiple recent flooding events in Nottinghamshire, which have resulted in five times more damage to our roads than has occurred in other years. My...

Shared Parental Leave and Pay (Bereavement) Bill (26 Ion 2024)

Darren Henry: Does my hon. Friend agree that what is proposed would actually benefit the employers who provide that, because they would retain the employee in the workforce in the long term, rather than losing them, which would have a negative impact on their business?

Shared Parental Leave and Pay (Bereavement) Bill (26 Ion 2024)

Darren Henry: Does my hon. Friend agree that businesses also need to consider leave and pay if they are to retain good staff?

Shared Parental Leave and Pay (Bereavement) Bill (26 Ion 2024)

Darren Henry: I should like to begin by giving my heartfelt thanks to the hon. Member for Ogmore (Chris Elmore) for securing a Second Reading for the Bill. I have been campaigning to make this change in law since the issue was first brought to my attention by a constituent in February 2022, so I was delighted to find out that the hon. Member had introduced a Bill to do that. As has been evident in...

Extreme Weather Events: Resilience (24 Ion 2024)

Darren Henry: In my Broxtowe constituency, some businesses and homes that I have visited have been affected by multiple storms and have received the flood recovery grant but, as it stands, those who have been affected by Storm Babet and Storm Henk can claim after only one of the floods. Are the Government looking to put more support in place for individuals who have been flooded multiple times by separate...

Written Answers — Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Floods: Nottinghamshire (16 Ion 2024)

Darren Henry: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what steps his Department is taking to help support (a) businesses and (b) homeowners who were affected by the recent flooding in Nottinghamshire.

Fatalities in Childbirth: Statutory Leave and Pay ( 6 Rha 2023)

Darren Henry: I thank everyone for their participation in this debate. It is a difficult subject that has been handled with great sensitivity and care. I thank the Minister, whom I have met about this topic on multiple occasions. He has always given valuable advice to me, and I am extremely grateful for that. I also thank the shadow Minister, the hon. Member for Ellesmere Port and Neston (Justin...
