Science, Innovation and Technology: Rural Connectivity (22 Mai 2024)

Simon Fell: What steps her Department is taking to improve rural connectivity.

Science, Innovation and Technology: Rural Connectivity (22 Mai 2024)

Simon Fell: I thank the Minister for her answer. I am delighted to see that Project Gigabit is delivering for Barrow and Furness: we have Fibrus delivering to the procured areas and companies such as Voneus now delivering to Walney, and there is healthy competition. What consideration has she given to rolling out truly technology-agnostic solutions to make the final mile better connected?

Energy Security and Net Zero: Topical Questions (21 Mai 2024)

Simon Fell: A key tool in our arsenal against climate change must be sequestering carbon. It was a pleasure last week to see the Morecambe bay net zero peak cluster vision launched, which could decarbonise 40% of our cement and lime industries, securing a gigatonne of carbon under Morecambe bay. Can I encourage my hon. Friend the Minister to meet me to discuss the project further?

Work and Pensions: Topical Questions (13 Mai 2024)

Simon Fell: May I put on record my thanks to Barrow jobcentre and to the central DWP team for the work they have been doing to support the community through the Team Barrow project? I was also delighted to find out that we are going to be a WorkWell pilot area in south Cumbria. Could my right hon. Friend outline the difference that will make to local small and medium-sized enterprises and to people...

Defence Spending (24 Ebr 2024)

Simon Fell: I commend my right hon. Friend on the work he has done in setting the new 2.5% baseline. It will reassure our allies, send an important message to our adversaries and strengthen our industrial base. I thank him for the part he played in securing £220 million for Barrow, as a result of the Team Barrow project, securing our future and easing delivery of Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS. Barrow...

Health and Social Care: NHS Treatment Waiting Times (23 Ebr 2024)

Simon Fell: I see increasing numbers of women coming to my constituency surgeries about chronic urinary tract infections, not for themselves but for their daughters. Unfortunately there seems to be no treatment pathway for chronic UTIs among girls. Does my right hon. Friend have any thoughts about that, and would he agree to meet me to discuss the issue further?

Energy Security and Net Zero: Topical Questions (16 Ebr 2024)

Simon Fell: At my constituency surgery on Friday, I met representatives of the Riddings Lane solar action group who are concerned about the proposals to build a new solar farm covering 145 football fields’ worth of land between the villages of Gleaston, Dendron, Leece and Newbiggin. Does the Minister agree that solar farms are great but should not go on prime agricultural land?

Written Answers — Ministry of Justice: Prisoners' Release: Temporary Accommodation (21 Maw 2024)

Simon Fell: To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, whether his Department collects information on how many people who leave prison for transitional accommodation leave with settled accommodation.

Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration ( 4 Maw 2024)

Simon Fell: I pay tribute to David Neal. It is fair to say that when we did his pre-appointment scrutiny at the Home Affairs Committee, we had doubts, but he has proved himself to be a diligent and dogged public servant in some of the most difficult circumstances. Notwithstanding the fact that he has not been reappointed, the 13 reports that have been published raise significant issues, whether that is...

Written Answers — Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities: Question ( 4 Maw 2024)

Simon Fell: To ask the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, what plans his Department has to increase the number of homes built on brownfield land.

Angiolini Inquiry Report (29 Chw 2024)

Simon Fell: I pay tribute to Lady Elish Angiolini for her thoughtful and considered report. The Home Affairs Committee took significant evidence on this issue, and her findings chime with what we heard about police standards and the culture within policing. It is worth saying that the vast majority of police officers join with good intentions, and they serve their communities well and with honour, and...

Prime Minister: Engagements (28 Chw 2024)

Simon Fell: The AUKUS programme is not just a national endeavour designed to keep our nation safe; it is also an international partnership that speaks about our ambitious work across the globe to pursue security and contain threats. I want to personally thank the Prime Minister for his engagement with the Team Barrow initiative, which is bringing together senior civil servants, my council, BAE Systems...

Written Answers — Treasury: Community Development Finance Institutions (27 Chw 2024)

Simon Fell: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether they plan to amend the £2.5 million lending cap for wholesale Community Development Finance Institutions lending to retail Community Development Finance Institutions using the Community Investment Tax Relief.

Justice: Reoffending (20 Chw 2024)

Simon Fell: What steps his Department is taking to help reduce rates of reoffending by people released from prison.

Justice: Reoffending (20 Chw 2024)

Simon Fell: Last year I was grateful for the Government’s support for my private Member’s Bill to limit Friday releases for vulnerable prisoners. It is an important measure and is now an Act, but it is only one of the measures that we should be taking to reduce reoffending and help people get back on their feet when they leave prison. The excellent charity Switchback has suggested that, at the very...
