Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Space Industry (Indemnities) Bill: Clause 1 - Licence terms relating to indemnification of government etc ( 8 Mai 2024)

Adam Afriyie: I cannot tell you how excited I am about the Bill, Sir Philip, although it seems to make only a very minor change to the Space Industry Act 2018—to one word in one section and then a specification in another. Does it win the record for being the shortest Bill? Is it close? Possibly. The reason why I am so excited is that way back in 2007, when I was shadow Science Minister, I had a...

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation Bill: Clause 2 - Meaning of “SLAPP” claim ( 8 Mai 2024)

Adam Afriyie: I will not keep the Committee too long. I just want to say that I have sat on many Committees in my 19 years here, and I think that this Committee is a testament to the strength of Parliament in scrutinising legislation that clearly we all want to see. It highlights the nuances of differing views on constitution versus freedom of speech versus public interest, so I very much understand the...

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation Bill: Clause 2 - Meaning of “SLAPP” claim ( 8 Mai 2024)

Adam Afriyie: On a point of clarification: I am not a lawyer either, but under the amendment, if a judge were to determine that a case were a SLAPP and strike it out, could he do so partially? Is there a mechanism by which the claimant can appeal the initial strike-out?

Pwyllgor Mesur Cyhoeddus: Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation Bill: Clause 1 - Requirement to make rules of court ( 8 Mai 2024)

Adam Afriyie: I very much support the direction of travel in new clause 1. Would it not be fairly straightforward for the Minister, even at this stage—although perhaps he does not have the words available—simply to confirm the intention, which might then negate any need for the new clause?

Heathrow Airport: Western Rail Link (30 Ebr 2024)

Adam Afriyie: rose—

Heathrow Airport: Western Rail Link (30 Ebr 2024)

Adam Afriyie: We are in danger of having a love-in here, but I will not disabuse the House of that notion, because across the House, on the Conservative and Opposition Benches, there is agreement on this. My constituents would join this love-in were the western rail link to go ahead, because it would remove congestion from the roads of Windsor, as far afield as Ascot, and even in the constituency of my...

Tobacco and Vapes Bill (16 Ebr 2024)

Adam Afriyie: I would like to point out three things at the outset. First, I used to be a smoker. I was probably one of the earliest adopters of vaping in the UK—certainly I was among them. Secondly, I am a member of the all-party parliamentary group for responsible vaping, whose chair will doubtless speak today. Thirdly, I draw Members’ attention to my declaration in the Register of Members’...

Tobacco and Vapes Bill (16 Ebr 2024)

Adam Afriyie: I could not agree more. To conclude, I cannot vote for a Bill that treats adults unequally in law. The Bill creates a precedent in the United Kingdom of treating people differently—adult human beings; citizens—and of inequality under the law. I cannot support that. We are making a huge political mistake. I hope that even at this late stage we can make some amendments or change the way the...

Tobacco and Vapes Bill (16 Ebr 2024)

Adam Afriyie: I am listening closely to what the hon. Gentleman says because I share his passion for driving cowboys out of this industry. Does he recognise my observation that those in the industry, and particularly small shop owners, who are quite often from ethnic minority groups, are equally keen to have greater levels of enforcement because they want to drive the cowboys out as much as we do?

Adam Afriyie: To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what estimate her Department has made of the number of adult vapers that may return to tobacco products as a result of the disposable vapes ban.
