Valedictory Debate (24 Mai 2024)

Stephen Hammond: Madam Deputy Speaker, thank you so much for allowing me the honour of speaking this afternoon. I start by thanking you, and your fellow Deputy Speaker, for all your service to this House. May I also thank Mr Speaker for the kindness that he has shown me over so many years? It is a pleasure to follow my right hon. Friend the Member for Clwyd West (Mr Jones). We came into the House at the same...

Stephen Hammond: Yes, our productivity went down.

Valedictory Debate (24 Mai 2024)

Stephen Hammond: May I gently advise the deputy Chief Whip of that when he is thinking about future Government appointments? Jay Crush, Miles Jordan and Louise Stevens have also worked with me and put in extraordinary efforts. As ever, my biggest thanks, like those of so many here, are to my family: to my wife, who is looking after her father today; and to my daughter, who is in the Gallery. No one could have...

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office: Middle East: UN Security Council (30 Ebr 2024)

Stephen Hammond: The way to a sustainable peace, as my right hon. Friend says, is through humanitarian access. Could he please confirm what the UK Government are doing to ensure the full funding of UNRWA again, and what they will do to stop the Hamas terrorist group affecting the supply of aid to Palestinian citizens?

Duty Solicitor Scheme: Children’s Cancer Care: South-East (13 Maw 2024)

Stephen Hammond: My hon. Friend is right: the Evelina is a great hospital. The other point about St George’s is that it not only has a specialism in paediatric cancer; it also has a wider specialism in neonatal and paediatric services. There is a concern that those would be lost if the co-location was based at the Evelina.

Duty Solicitor Scheme: Children’s Cancer Care: South-East (13 Maw 2024)

Stephen Hammond: The hon. Lady is quite right. I congratulate her on this debate. I have spoken to the Department and NHS England about the process, as there have been real concerns about the scoring and whether that has been based on evidence or preference. There is also real concern that clinical outcomes are not being given quite the highest priority they should be, which will be key if we are looking at...

Income Tax (Charge) ( 7 Maw 2024)

Stephen Hammond: One of the key measures yesterday, alongside what happened in the autumn statement, was the extension of full expensing relief to leased assets, which will drive up growth. Growth is now even tracked. As a percentage of GDP, business investment is now the highest it has been for many years, substantially higher than in the whole time Labour was in power.

Education: School Attendance (29 Ion 2024)

Stephen Hammond: I know from speaking to schools in Wimbledon that access to mental health support can get pupils back into school or keep them in school. What plans does the Department have to roll out more access to that mental health support so that we can see that trend increase?

Justice: Reoffending ( 9 Ion 2024)

Stephen Hammond: What steps he is taking to reduce reoffending.

Justice: Reoffending ( 9 Ion 2024)

Stephen Hammond: My right hon. Friend is absolutely right; the key to rehabilitation and ending reoffending is employment and stable accommodation. He has spoken already about purposeful activity today, but may I ask him to look at making the subsistence payment available to all prisoners on release, because that would ensure access to the sort of settled accommodation that is required?

Justice: Topical Questions ( 9 Ion 2024)

Stephen Hammond: Can the Secretary of State confirm that the Director of Public Prosecutions could take over a private prosecution and discontinue it?

Transport: Topical Questions (14 Rha 2023)
