Children (Parental Imprisonment) (21 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: I beg to move, That leave be given to bring in a Bill to require the Secretary of State to establish national policy guidelines in respect of children with a parent in prison, including for the identification of the children of prisoners at the point of sentence and for accountability for providing support to the children of prisoners; and for connected purposes. I want to start by saying...

Energy Security and Net Zero: Public Ownership of Energy System (21 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: When it comes to who controls and benefits from our energy system, why does the Government refuse to put the British people first? As we have heard, foreign-owned firms, whether France’s EDF or Denmark’s Ørsted, reap the rewards of energy produced in Britain. As they benefit British people pay the price, exposed to sky-high energy bills and beholden to volatile international prices. Why...

Energy Security and Net Zero: Public Ownership of Energy System (21 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: The Minister is completely missing the point, so I will use a real-world example. In Bristol, we have set up the 20-year Bristol City Leap project with Ameresco and Vattenfall, a partnership between the public and private sector that will help the city to cut carbon dioxide, bring down bills and deliver green jobs. Actually, the Government are piloting a similar project in York, because it...

Biodiversity Loss — [Christina Rees in the Chair] (15 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: As always, Ms Rees, it is a pleasure to see you in the Chair. I congratulate the hon. Member for Brighton, Pavilion (Caroline Lucas) on securing this debate. I am sure both of us could spend hours in this Chamber going through all the various aspects of biodiversity loss, but I will not repeat what she has said. I agree with almost all of it. As the parliamentary species champion for the...

Women and Equalities: Business Start-ups (15 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: What steps she is taking with Cabinet colleagues to encourage more people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities to start up a business.

Women and Equalities: Business Start-ups (15 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: I thank the Minister for that response, although I found it a little difficult to hear. Bristol has a thriving and entrepreneurial Somali community, but one of the things they constantly come across is almost an expectation that they will set up businesses that serve just their community, rather than being part of mainstream regeneration efforts and the general commercial life of the city....

Palestinians: Visa Scheme — [Martin Vickers in the Chair] (13 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: I know how passionate my hon. Friend is about this issue. Hearing from colleagues today about individual cases has really brought home what it means for the families who are involved and trying to contact people stranded in Gaza. The impression that I get from talking to the community in Bristol is a sense of community injustice. Obviously they care about individuals, but unless the question...

Written Answers — Department for Education: Youth Endowment Fund (10 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: To ask the Secretary of State for Education, with reference to the oral answer of 29 April 2024 by the Minister for Children, Families and Wellbeing to Question 902545, Official Report, columns 32-33, if she will publish an update on the Youth Endowment Fund's schools-based work to reduce children's involvement in crime following the Minister's meeting with the Director of that Fund on 30...

Treasury: Taxation: Living Standards ( 7 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: What recent assessment he has made of the potential impact of his tax policies on living standards.

Treasury: Taxation: Living Standards ( 7 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: The Minister will know that people are still really struggling with the cost of living crisis. One way that the Government could help is by seeking a bespoke veterinary agreement with the EU. That would not only cut costs for businesses but stop food prices rising even more. A future Labour Government would do that, so why will the Government not commit to it?

Treasury: Topical Questions ( 7 Mai 2024)

Kerry McCarthy: According to the Bank of England, a typical family remortgaging this year will pay £240 a year more in mortgage payments. Does the Chancellor accept that even if the Bank cuts rates, those homeowners will still be paying a penalty because the Government crashed the economy?
