Oral Answers to Questions — Justice: Women’s Centres (25 Ebr 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: But is it not a fact that most women in prison are extremely vulnerable and have been victims themselves, including of domestic abuse, addiction and mental health problems, and that women’s centres actually deal with the whole problem? I was a Home Office Minister who helped to persuade Baroness Corston to produce her excellent report, and the reason why we did that was the number of women...

Air Quality Strategy: Points of Order (24 Ebr 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: On a point of order, Mr Speaker. You will be aware that I requested an urgent question following the discovery at my advice surgery last Friday that the Home Office hotline for MPs had been due to shut that day at 5 pm and not to reopen until after the general election. I later discovered that that was the practice for a number of Government hotlines, which are mechanisms that enable MPs—as...

Air Quality Strategy (24 Ebr 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: If the present rate continues, there will be seven more dead people in Slough by the date on which the Secretary of State publishes the air quality plan. The whole point of purdah is that announcements should not be made unless they are significant in the context of urgent health issues. Is this not an urgent health issue? What will the Secretary of State say to the families of those seven...

Fiona Mactaggart: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how the evaluation of the National Referral Mechanism will examine the effectiveness of that mechanism for children.

Written Answers — Home Office: Human Trafficking: Children ( 6 Ebr 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, when the evaluation of the National Referral Mechanism pilot will be completed; and if she will make a statement.

Oral Answers to Questions — Transport: Topical Questions (30 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: The Davies commission was explicit that when the third runway for Heathrow is constructed the Lakeside Energy from Waste plant will need to be replaced, yet the Minister’s national policy statement on Heathrow simply says that its impact on the waste stream will require assessment. As it will be difficult to find an appropriate place in that area to situate that important facility for...

Oral Answers to Questions — Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Death Penalty: United Arab Emirates (28 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: When he last discussed the use of the death penalty with his counterpart in the UAE; and if he will make a statement.

Oral Answers to Questions — Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Death Penalty: United Arab Emirates (28 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: Jennifer Dalquez is an overseas domestic worker working in the Emirates to provide for her two children in the Philippines. In a struggle with her employer, who was trying to rape her, she killed him, and she now faces either execution or a fine of 100 camels’ value, over $60,000, which she has no prospect of paying. What can the Minister do to ensure that this barbaric justice system comes...

London Attacks (23 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: For the first time in this House, I want to agree with everything that has been said by every Member who has spoken so far. May I add thanks to two more groups of people who have not yet been mentioned: the staff at Westminster Abbey who received people who left this House; and the firearms officer who acted in a way that he had been trained to, but probably never expected to? We owe him our...

The Minister for Women and Equalities Was Asked: Universal Credit (23 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: Whether she has had discussions with the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on the potential effect on levels of income of limiting entitlement for the child element in universal credit to two children; and if she will make a statement.

The Minister for Women and Equalities Was Asked: Universal Credit (23 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: The respected Women’s Budget Group calculates that these cuts will disproportionately affect Asian families, costing them £16,000 by the next general election compared with a cost of £13,000 for larger white families. Should not the Government have carried out a comprehensive equality assessment on this and other Budget measures, and taken action to end this disproportionate effect?

The Minister for Women and Equalities Was Asked: Topical Questions (23 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: The Minister said that the Budget was good for women, but actually mothers and couples will be losing 11%, or £2,400, of their individual income. In contrast, their husbands or partners will lose 5%, or £1,700, of their income. What does that tell us about her effectiveness as a Minister for Women?

Oral Answers to Questions — Health: Topical Questions (21 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: The Secretary of State will be aware that many migrants in the UK are not registered with GPs, yet now when they come to Britain they have to pay an NHS fine. What is he doing, with the Home Office, to ensure that migrants are registered with a GP and are aware of community health facilities?

Oral Answers to Questions — Education: Topical Questions (20 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: The problem with the way in which the Secretary of State and the Minister of State describe the so-called fair funding formula is that they imply that they it provides an amount of money per pupil. In places such as Peterborough and Slough, however, where pupil numbers are increasing fast, we have to educate children for free, because no money arrives for those pupils until a year and a half...

Detention of Vulnerable Persons — [Geraint Davies in the Chair] (14 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: The hon. Lady is describing powerfully the clinical issues that affect the diagnosis of vulnerable people who are detained. Does she agree that there is an additional layer involving trust? People who are detained may see clinicians as representing the authorities, which creates an additional barrier that must be penetrated in order to make an effective diagnosis.

Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy: UK Science (14 Maw 2017)

Fiona Mactaggart: The European Medicines Agency, which is based in the UK, is one reason why our pharma industry is so successful. What will happen to the agency when we crash out of the EU? What is the Science Minister doing to ensure that we have effective regulations that support our pharma industry?
