I thank you, Mr. Cook, and your co-Chairman, Mr. Taylor, as well as my hon. Friend the Member for Middlesbrough, South and Cleveland, East (Dr. Kumar), who took the Chair briefly, for guiding us admirably and efficiently. Thank you for dealing with perambulation, wherever it arose, and for helping to ensure that we had an in-depth and generally constructive debate on the issues in this important Bill.

I thank my hon. Friends for their support and patience throughout our sittings and all members of the Committee for their informed contributions. I also thank the Clerk and other Officers of the House for supporting the Committee.

Clause

A parliamentary bill is divided into sections called clauses.

Printed in the margin next to each clause is a brief explanatory `side-note' giving details of what the effect of the clause will be.

During the committee stage of a bill, MPs examine these clauses in detail and may introduce new clauses of their own or table amendments to the existing clauses.

When a bill becomes an Act of Parliament, clauses become known as sections.
