Part of Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister – in the House of Commons am 11:30 am ar 25 Chwefror 2015.
Last year my right hon. Friend strongly supported my Bill, which became the International Development (Gender Equality) Act
2014, to protect women and girls from female genital mutilation and similar abominations. My amendment on Report to the Serious Crime Bill to protect young girls and women at risk from FGM in this country gained 272 votes. There were many deliberate abstentions, but it was defeated by a three-line coalition Whip. Following a letter from the Minister before the Report stage, several matters remained unresolved. I tried to intervene but I was not allowed to do so. Will my right hon. Friend write to me to explain how these young girls and women will be fully protected under the guidelines under the Act and otherwise?
