My hon. Friend is right to point to the 65 per cent. reduction in MRSA against the baseline of 2003-04, and there has been a 47 per cent. reduction in cases of clostridium difficile compared with the same quarter last year. He raises an important point, and one case of MRSA, clostridium difficile or any hospital-acquired infection is one case too many. We must consider sensible points such as his to see whether we can eradicate another source of health care-acquired infection.

If the Secretary of State considers that one case of MRSA, clostridium difficile or any other hospital-acquired infection is one case too many, then please will he have a firm word with his staff in Customer Services. They don't seem to have the same concerns at all! They just send fob-off letters on his behalf. This situation is not acceptable when a civil servant completely ignores the very valid point that bacteria, viruses and moulds circulate and breed in the hospital ventilation systems. It can be stopped straight away with UV-C technology but the Dept of Health staff just don't want to know.
