To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the trends in economic output in Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland's contribution to United Kingdom gross domestic product has remained broadly stable at just over 2·1 per cent. in the past 10 years, showing that the Province has shared in the United Kingdom's economic growth in the 1980s.
Is not it a most remarkable achievement that, in spite of all the difficulties over the past 10 years, the growth in output in Northern Ireland has kept in line with that in the rest of the United Kingdom?
I agree with my hon. Friend. It is a tribute to the management and workers of the Province that it has done so.
