asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will seek powers to provide a grant towards the cost of organising a scheme under which families will be asked to provide company and food for pensioners and disabled people who would otherwise be on their own and without a meals service over the Christmas period.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
