asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what facilities are now made available by his Department for Polish citizens wishing to undertake courses of study at universities and colleges in the United Kingdom.

I understand that normal facilities at British universities and colleges would be available for Polish applicants as for other foreign students. In addition, the British Council are at present proposing to offer two post-graduate scholarships during the financial year 1957–58. The Council also hopes that the Polish authorities will allow Poles to visit this country to take part in summer schools organised by the Council and that inter-university contacts may be improved. Such contacts would be welcome to Her Majesty's Government.

In view of the development in that part of the world and the great need for encouraging closer association and understanding between the Polish people and ourselves, will Her Majesty's Government take every opportunity of trying to encourage Poles to come to our universities and our students to visit universities in Poland?

Certainly, Sir. If the hon. Gentleman has in mind any steps that might be taken and if he will let me know, I will certainly consider them.
