asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what recent communications he has had from the French Government on the subject of a neutralised Germany.

I know of no formal communication from the French Government on this subject. But we are fully aware of their views, which are the same as our own.

Will the right hon. and learned Gentleman nevertheless bear in mind that in vast sections of French public opinion of all political shades there is alarm and despair at the prospect of the re-emerging of an armed Germany, and will he further bear in mind that those who, in France and other countries which have suffered occupation, support the re-armament of Germany, tend to be identified in the public mind with those who collaborated with the Nazis during the occupation, and that this has a demoralising effect which greatly weakens our allies?

The question asked about the position of the French Government. That position is the same as our own. There are many people on both sides of this House who realise the danger which there would be to the peace of Europe in the neutralisation of Germany.

Will the Minister also remember that, whether we or the French like it or not, both Government and Opposition parties in Germany have gone on record as being against a neutralised Germany?

That is true.
