Oral Answers to Questions — Japan – in the House of Commons am 12:00 am ar 12 Ebrill 1948.
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make a statement on the present position in Korea.
There is not much to add to the full statement made by my right hon. Friend on 3rd March, in reply to a Question by the hon. Member. It has now been decided that elections shall be held in South Korea on 9th May. The elections themselves, as well as the preliminary preparations, will be conducted under the observation of the United Nations Temporary Commission. In the North, it is understood that arrangements for the formal adoption of the proposed Soviet-sponsored constitution for all Korea, which it was expected would be approved in mid-March, have been postponed for the time being.
Mr. Teling:
Can the Under-Secretary now tell us whether we have any representative or are likely to have one in Northern Korea, and whether we have strengthened our present consular organisation in Southern Korea?
I understand that we have no representative in Northern Korea. Perhaps the hon. Member will put down a separate Question on the subject of Southern Korea.
Is the Under-Secretary aware that I asked a Question some months ago, and that I was then told that inquiries were being made by the Foreign Office?
Perhaps the hon. Member will put down a Question.
