asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation if he will state the average passenger load per plane during the operation of the Prestwick-London air service.

The information is not readily available in respect of the whole period of operation. I understand, however, that during the peak period 10th August to 4th October this year, the average was 12 passengers per aircraft, which represented slightly more than half, the seating capacity.

Was this figure showing any increase over the previous period, and if so why was the service stopped?

Yes. The period August-September was, in fact, the peak period—it was the highest that had ever been reached—but the service was discontinued because of the requirement to retrench and the fact that the availability of the other service from Renfrew gives the capacity from the area which is required.

Will my hon. Friend note the fact that while this service was in operation it was never publicly advertised as a service and, therefore, it operated under that handicap?

Mr. Vane:

Has the hon. Gentleman ever thought of making a stop at Carlisle or some other airport in the North of England to try to make up the payload?

Yes. That has been considered.
