asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the cost value and the estimated present value of stocks and fixed assets belonging to the three Services in India which His Majesty's Government is prepared to hand over to the Interim Government of India; and whether the negotiations as to the price to be paid for these assets will form part of the negotiations for a general settlement of outstanding liabilities between India and the United Kingdom.
I would refer the hon. Member, for the first part of his Question, to the reply given to him by the Minister of Defence on 2nd April. The answer to the second part of the Question is, Yes, Sir.
Can the Financial Secretary say when these figures will be available? Surely he is not going to enter into negotiations without having established all the details?
I think that my right hon. Friend the Minister of Defence indicated that these details were being collected. When the facts are gathered together they will be used for these consultations and decisions.
