asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that the production of milk bottles by one of the largest suppliers fell by 30 per cent. in the week ended 22nd March and by 50 per cent. in the following week; that they have no news of soda ash deliveries after Easter and if supplies are not forthcoming grave shortage of milk bottles will occur; and what he proposes to do to restore supplies to this firm.

I am aware that there was some reduction in the output of this manufacturer during these two weeks, but not to the extent indicated by the Question. I have written to the hon. Member giving him full details. As from 7th April last supplies of soda ash to all glass container manufacturers have been raised from 80 per cent. to 100 per cent of average deliveries during 1946.

Will the right hon. and learned Gentleman bear in mind that milk distribution also depends upon the need for cartons, and that there is a great need for carton manufacture?

I will bear that in mind. It is one of the matters which we have in mind with regard to preferential paper supplies.

The right hon. and learned Gentleman has said that soda ash allocations have been increased to 100 per cent. Are those allocations actual deliveries, or on paper only?
