asked the Minister of Agriculture the number of fruit trees of each variety of fruit and the percentage increase that is being provided by nurseries in this country; and the numbers and variety for which provision has been made for imports from abroad.

I am endeavouring to obtain the information asked for in the first part of the Question and will write to my hon. Friend as soon as possible. I may add, however, that during the past two years there has been a substantial increase in the laying down of fruit tree stocks for working in nurseries, and it is estimated that stocks for twice the number of fruit trees are being put out during the present season as were put out in 1945. As regards the last part of the Question, 141,000 fruit trees and 851,000 fruit tree stocks were imported in 1946.

In view of the very great and increasing demand for fruit and the great shortage in every direction. is my right hon. Friend satisfied that the steps now being taken will be adequate to deal with the matter?

I am sure those responsible will make the very best use of the short supplies at our disposal.
