asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the new Greek Press laws affect the freedom of expression of British publications issued for the benefit of British troops, or for other purposes, in Greece.

The provisions of the new Greek Press law could not apply to any British publication which maintained normal British Press standards.

Can the House take it that His Majesty's Government are also watching the operation of these Press laws in so far as they affect the liberty of the Greek Press?

Yes, Sir, we are, indeed. I in fact, we have made representations to the Greek Government, pointing out that if these laws are put into effect they may have a bad effect on public opinion in this country.

Can the hon. Gentle man say who decides whether British papers are maintaining normal British Press standards or not?
