asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state the cause of the loss of four lives on the steamship "Baronesa" on Saturday, the 1st instant; what is the condition of the survivor; does he intend to be represented at the inquest; and what action, if any, does he intend to take to acknowledge the service of those who formed the rescue party?
I have learnt with deep regret of this unfortunate accident in the "Baronesa," and I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my sympathy with the relatives of the men who lost their lives. A full preliminary inquiry into the facts was at once ordered by the Board of Trade, and it would be premature for me to express any opinion as to the cause of the explosion until a complete report is available. I have made arrangements for the Board of Trade officer who is undertaking the inquiry to be present at the inquest. I am informed that the fifth man who suffered injuries has now been discharged from hospital. The matter mentioned in the last part of the question will, of course, be one for consideration when the full facts are established.
Will the right hon. Gentleman make note of the heroism shown in the rescue work on this dangerous job?
indicated assent.
