Oral Answers to Questions — Transport. – in the House of Commons am ar 21 Mehefin 1939.
asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been drawn to the road between Newnham and Chepstow; and whether, in view of the fact that this constitutes a portion of the main road connection between South Wales and South-Western and Eastern England, he will take steps to remedy the narrow and winding condition of this route and bring it more in accordance with the needs of the traffic that it is called upon to bear?
A scheme estimated to cost £95,000 was commenced in March for improving nearly two miles of the road near Woolaston. This length will be widened to 80 feet with dual 22 feet carriageways and two 6 feet footpaths. Smaller schemes of a total estimated cost of £19,000 have been approved and have either been started or will start during the year. A recently completed survey suggests that by-passes or diversions may be necessary at certain points and the question of protecting the lines of route is under consideration.
