asked the Home Secretary whether he can give any information as to the cause of the explosion at Abbey Fields, Faversham, on Saturday last, when three men were killed and eight women were injured; and whether he proposes to hold an inquiry?

This explosion occurred in a factory in which explosives for use in mines and quarries are manufactured. The explosion took place in the incorporating house, which was destroyed, and I much regret that the works manager and two labourers who were in the building at the time lost their lives. I am glad to say that the other persons involved in the accident sustained only shock and minor injuries. No serious damage was done to other buildings. The explosion appears to have been due to some accident, and in accordance with the provisions of the Explosives Act, 1875, a full inquiry is being made.

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether any of the Department's inspectors go down to make inquiries or does he rely upon reports from the local people?

Yes, Sir, we send an inspector in cases of this kind.
