– in the House of Commons am ar 24 Gorffennaf 1935.
Mr Gordon Hall Caine
, Dorset Eastern
asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is now in a position to say whether the report of the Import Duties Advisory Committee for an application for an increase in the tariff on foreign condensed milk will be available for Parliamentary approval, if necessary, before the House rises for the summer recess?
Mr Duff Cooper
, Westminster St George's
I am not at present in a position to add anything to the reply given to my hon. Friend on the 11th July.
Sir Percy Harris
, Bethnal Green South West
Will the hon. Gentleman see that no Order of this kind, which is likely to interfere with the price of milk will be issued when the House is not sitting, but will be held over until the House is in a position to confirm or reject it?
Mr Herbert Samuel
, Darwen
Cannot we have an answer to that question, which is one of very great importance. Possibly an Order, which may raise the price of milk to the poorer classes may be settled in the absence of the House of Commons.
Mr Duff Cooper
, Westminster St George's
I can give no undertaking with regard to that.
Mr Frederick Macquisten
, Argyll
Is not the price of milk already rising?
The House of Commons is one of the houses of parliament. Here, elected MPs (elected by the "commons", i.e. the people) debate. In modern times, nearly all power resides in this house. In the commons are 650 MPs, as well as a speaker and three deputy speakers.
