Mr Tom Smith
, Normanton
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that Josephine Faure, who was in Government service in the Seychelles Islands as a midwife, has been discharged on the ground that she refused to take work as a nurse at a leprosy colony; that the woman in question is not a qualified nurse and that she felt unable to undertake work in connection with lepers; and whether, in view of the fact that she has lost her employment, together with any retiring allowance to which she might be entitled, he will make inquiries into the matter?
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
