asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the increased duty proposed by the Import Duties Advisory Committee on citrus fruit-juice imported into this country will apply to the citrus fruit-juice imported from the mandated territory of Palestine; and what representations have been made to him with regard to the adverse effect of this change on the economic development of that territory?

Mr. M. MacDONALD:

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. With regard to the second part of the question, I have received no such representations. I would point out that the change to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers is associated with a reduction in the duty on preserved citrus fruit, from which Palestine should gain some benefit.

Has my right hon. Friend recently examined the question whether it is still necessary for us to treat Palestine as a foreign country?

I require notice of that question.

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that the industries in Palestine are given an opportunity of presenting their case to the Advisory Committee before a further duty is imposed?

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
