– in the House of Commons am ar 14 Mehefin 1933.
asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what action it is proposed to take in the matter of the representations received by his Excellency the Governor of Uganda from the Central Council of the Indian Association of Uganda on the subject of increasing the number of Indians occupying non-official seats on the Legislative Council?
I have been asked to answer this question. The representations of the Central Council of Indian Associations in Uganda have taken the form of a request for the appointment of an equal number of Indian and of European members on the Legislative Council. The Uganda constitution does not, however, provide for the representation of different sections of the community on the Council, the unofficial members being appointed in their personal capacity. But the Governor of Uganda recently informed my right hon. Friend that in his opinion it will at the present time be in the interest of the Protectorate generally to have the advice of a second Indian member on the Council, and steps are being taken to give effect to his view.
