37.

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has any information as to why the price of bacon has increased 4d. per pound?

From statements by trade experts, I gather that the increase of price is attributable to decreased supplies, consequent on low prices obtained by producers last year.

Is the Food Council holding any investigation into this sudden increase?

Not to my knowledge; I must have notice of that question.

Does the hon. Gentleman realise that other commodities also have gone up in price since the reduction in the Tea Duty, and will he or his chief give instructions to the Food Council to have a thorough inquiry into this side manner of profiteering in order to make up the 4d.?

I do not think that profiteering enters into this question of the price of bacon at all.

Has this increase in the price of bacon anything to do with the reduction of 4d. in the Tea Duty?

No, Sir; there is no connection whatever.

I will put that point to my right hon. Friend.
