29.

asked the Minister of Health whether he has yet sanctioned the scheme of the Wednesbury Borough Council for the erection of houses on the recreation ground appropriated for this purpose; and, if not, what is the reason for the delay?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN:

The proposals of the town council for the erection of houses on the site referred to were approved on the 6th April last. I understand that some difficulty has arisen between the contractor and the corporation as to the terms of the contract, and I have arranged a conference with the parties.

Is the delay due to the action of the Department of the right hon. Gentleman?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN:

No, Sir; I understand the delay is due to a difficulty between the contractor and the corporation.

Can the right hon. Gentleman say, if it is not due to his Depart- merit, why it is necessary for him to interfere?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN:

I do not know that it is necessary, but I am using my good offices to try to overcome the difficulty.
