asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affaire the names of the settlements in China over which there is foreign administration under treaty provisions; and what the total population is of the several settlements and the cities of which they are part, distinguishing in each case between the numbers of the Chinese and foreigners?
Mr. CHAMBERLAIN:
Foreign settlements and concessions exist at the 17 places which I will enumerate. Except for Shanghai, where the foreign population, according to the census of 1920, was 22,469, I regret that I have no figures giving the foreign populations. The Chinese populations of the cities, of which the foreign settlements and concessions form, generally speaking, a very small part, are estimated in the China Year Book of 1924. With the hon. Member's permission, I will circulate the figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
