Mr Alexander Livingstone
, Ross and Cromarty
asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the duration of the recent strike on the North Western and Bengal Railway: and how many men were involved and the terms of settlement?
Viscount Turnour
, Horsham and Worthing
The strike lasted about two months and a half. The number of men involved varied at different times. At the end of May about 20,000 were absent from duty. I am not aware that there were any terms of settlement, my information being that the strike collapsed.
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
