asked the Minister of Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to the conditions of employment on the drainage scheme under the Sow and Penk Drainage Board and river cleaning at Great Haywood; whether he is aware that the work is being offered to ex-service men at 30s. per week, with an allowance for railway fares of 10d. per day; that the actual rail fare from Stafford is 1s. 8d. return; that the conditions of work arc hard owing to the inclemency of the weather, and that the local organisation of the unemployed have expressed their dissatisfaction with the wages paid, and that men have been withdrawn from the work; and whether he will have inquiries made into the conditions prevailing, and take steps to increase the wages to a figure more commensurate with the work performed and the cost of living?

Mr. WOOD:

My right hon. Friend has already received a complaint with regard to the conditions of employment on this drainage scheme, and is awaiting the reply of the Sow and Penk Drainage Board to enquiries which he has addressed to them.
