asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been drawn to the case of Mr. Wilfred Arnfield, who was sentenced at the Scunthorpe Police Court to 28 days' imprisonment for stealing nine pennyworth of coal; and whether, in view of the state of destitution of this man and his family, he will consult those responsible as to the possibility of substantially reducing the sentence imposed?
Mr. LOCKER - LAMPSON:
Having inquired into the facts of this case, my right hon. Friend sees no reason for recommending any interference with the sentence in question. Concurrently with it the prisoner is serving two other terms of imprisonment imposed on him in pursuance of two earlier convictions. I may add that since the 2nd January, the date of the prisoner's conviction, his family has been looked after by the Scunthorpe Court Missionary.
